DC Electromagnetic describes a primary method of actuation for industrial brakes, particularly those of a fail-safe design. In this configuration, the braking force is generated mechanically by a set of pre-loaded springs. The “DC Electromagnetic” component is an integrated coil that, when energized with Direct Current (DC), creates a powerful and stable magnetic field. This magnetic field overcomes the spring force, pulling an armature plate away from a friction disc and releasing the brake, allowing the shaft to rotate freely. When the DC power is cut—either intentionally for a stop or due to a power failure—the magnetic field collapses, and the springs instantly expand to clamp the friction disc, applying the brake. This spring-applied, electrically-released principle is the foundation of fail-safe braking, making DC electromagnetic brakes the standard for critical holding applications like crane hoists, elevators, and robotic arms where preventing uncontrolled movement is paramount.
