Electromagnetic motor brakes are commonly used as compact hoist motor brakes or auxiliary brakes on smaller overhead cranes, wire rope hoists, chain hoists, and positioning drives. They are typically mounted on the motor end (or integrated into the motor design) and provide fast engagement and release. Many are spring-applied and electrically released, so they can function as a fail-safe holding brake for certain duty levels.
